After a stroke

What to expect after having a stroke...

Immediate assessment

You will be received by the Emergency Department staff and assessed jointly by a member of the stroke team (this could be a doctor or a nurse).

Outside office hours and on the weekends we continue to provide round-the-clock specialist care with the help of telemedicine. This allows the staff assessing you to call upon a stroke doctor to help determine the diagnosis and decide on investigations and treatment that are right for you.

Telemedicine allows the specialist to see and ask questions of you or accompanying adults about the onset and nature of symptoms, as well as other relevant medical history.

You will have regular observations measured and recorded, including level of consciousness, blood pressure, pulse rate, oxygen levels in the blood, breathing rate, temperature, blood sugar level. The frequency of the observations will be determined by the stroke team looking after you.
