Orthopaedic Surgery

The orthopaedic department deals with all musculoskeletal conditions and works closely with the rheumatology department. The work of the department is split into trauma (emergency work) and elective orthopaedics (planned work), both take place on the same site and share outpatient and operating theatre facilities. We have dedicated nurses, therapists and administrative support staff, working closely with our consultant teams.

Trauma and emergency admissions are usually accommodated on either Saxmundham Ward or Needham Ward, which are both specialised in the management of fracture patients and other orthopaedic emergencies. Outpatients who have attended the Emergency Department may be referred to one of the consultant-led fracture clinics, which are held daily from Monday to Friday.

Elective orthopaedic patients will be seen in our orthopaedic outpatient department and those undergoing surgery will usually be admitted to either the Raedwald Day Surgery Unit or to Martlesham Ward which is a dedicated orthopaedic ward. The Ipswich orthopaedic department has a strict policy for prevention of infection and our infection control measures are amongst the most effective in the country. Joint replacement surgery is undertaken in modern “ultra clean” theatres in the orthopaedic theatre suite.
