Lung Cancer

With lung cancer care we have the ability to assess and diagnose the majority of cases without needing to refer to other centres. We have a well-established bronchoscopy service including the provision of EBUS TBNA (endobronchial ultrasound mediastinal node biopsy) which means most patients can be accurately staged at Ipswich without surgical intervention. This service is not commonly available in district general hospitals and we are grateful to the Somersham Ward Support Group for their generous donation that supported the purchase of the specialist equipment needed. When surgery is needed patients can meet the thoracic surgeon in our department.

Radiotherapy and oncology treatment for lung cancer are carried out at Ipswich Hospital and we are fortunate to have access to the most up-to-date equipment and techniques. The consultants in the Diagnostic Imaging Department have the largest experience in the east of England of treating cancers in the lung with radiofrequency ablation, which can be used when surgery is not possible.

We work with two lung cancer specialist nurses who are closely involved in the provision of lung cancer care in both our and the Oncology departments.
