Welcome to Ipswich Hospital
Our Passion, Your Care
Respiratory Medicine

The Department of Respiratory Medicine, also known as the Chest Clinic, is found in Clinic H and is next to the Lung Function Unit, Clinic J. We are opposite the X-ray Department and so are ideally situated for ease of access to the services needed for our patients.

We offer clinical services covering most aspects of respiratory medicine, also known as thoracic medicine, with the ability to refer people on to tertiary referral centres (such as Papworth Hospital) as needed. Our position next to the lung function laboratory means we have seamless access to the extensive range of investigations and services they provide allowing our patients to have all the necessary physiological investigations we need.

We work closely with our thoracic surgeon who spends Monday of each week in our department conducting an outpatient clinic, seeing patients on the wards and taking part in our weekly multidisciplinary chest meeting. In these meetings, specialists in the treatment of chest diseases from the Chest Clinic, X-ray Department, Pathology, Oncology and Thoracic Surgery meet and discuss the optimum care of individual patients so that we can make the best clinical decisions possible.

Patients needing thoracic surgery are seen and assessed in our department, with surgery being performed at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust by specialist thoracic (not cardiac) surgeons.
