Radiotherapy Physicist

Radiotherapy physicists are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council  under the protected title of Clinical Scientist.

Our principle roles include:

  • Advising colleagues on issues that may affect the radiation dose delivered to the patient.
  • Checking treatment plans before the patient starts treatment.
  • Calibrating the treatment machines so that they deliver the correct dose to the patient. Many measurements are done in a water tank, as shown in the figure below.

Training for the role requires a degree in Physics, followed by an MSc in Radiation Physics and a four-year on-the-job training scheme. This training is coordinated and assessed by the Institute of Physics in Medicine and Biology and the Association of Clinical Scientists.
