Pharmacy Procurement, Stores, Distribution and Portering Services
Inside the Pharmacy at Ipswich Hospital

Procurement
The Pharmacy procurement service is responsible for sourcing all pharmaceuticals for the hospital. We stock over 8000 different medicines and buy from over 60 different suppliers. Most of our orders are sent electronically. We are active members of the East Anglia Approved Purchasing Group and work closely with the Commercial Medicines Unit to secure contracts with suppliers. Procurement contracts play a vital role in the hospital pharmacy as they help ensure that the medicines we purchase are of a good quality and at the best possible price for the NHS (the most economic cost to the health economy).

Stores
The Pharmacy stores service receives orders from various pharmaceutical suppliers. On receipt of a delivery the stores team will thoroughly inspect the contents to ensure all the items are correct and suitable for use. Particular attention is paid to ensure all medicines are stored in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. We electronically monitor all cold and ambient storage areas and an alarm sounds if it goes outside the specified range. We also have an emergency drug cupboard for access to medicines out-of-hours

Distribution
The distribution service supplies pharmaceutical orders to wards and departments, as well as to numerous external clients including a hospice. The pharmacy distribution assistants process, collect, and pack these orders ready to be delivered back to the wards. The distribution service also organises the distribution of cardiac arrest boxes and anaphylactic shock packs and is responsible for maintaining the supplies of the emergency drug cupboard for out of hours use.

Portering
Our Pharmacy portering service is responsible for the safe and timely delivery of pharmaceuticals and prescriptions around the hospital.
