Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit and Quality Control
Our Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit is dedicated to the manufacture of high quality medicinal products

Our Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit (PMU) has a team of pharmacists, technicians and assistants dedicated to the manufacture of high quality medicinal products to support clinical care within the NHS.

Our unit has been designated as a lead manufacturing facility in the East of England as part of the national strategy for modernisation of hospital manufacturing services.

We are licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency for the manufacture of special medicinal products ('specials') and investigational medicinal products (IMPs) for use in clinical trials.

Our product portfolio includes:

  • sterile manufactured products in ampoules, vials and bottles. The product range includes injections, infusions, eye drops and sterile oral mixtures;
  • non-sterile products for internal or external use including oral mixtures, mouthwashes, creams and ointments;
  • pre-packing. The product range includes repackaged and over-labelled medicinal products with ready-to-dispense patient directions present;
  • investigational medicinal products. We are able to manufacture sterile and non-sterile products for use in clinical trials, as well as providing randomisation and blinding services. The unit is also able to over-encapsulate licensed medicinal products for the purpose of blinding, and provide matching placebo capsules; and
  • one-off liquid oral medicines, creams and ointments etc. to support dispensing activities within community pharmacies and dispensing doctors surgeries.

All of our products are manufactured to high standards and all activities are carried out under the strict controls of our quality assurance system. The Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit is supported by a quality control laboratory which is equipped to perform a wide range of analytical techniques. The laboratory tests raw materials, containers and finished products, and undertakes environmental monitoring of the manufacturing facility.

We supply a wide range of customers, both within and outside of the NHS, including hospitals, pharmacies, GP practices and dentists.

In addition, our more popular product lines can be purchased from a NHS wholesaler – the Oxford Pharmacy Store.

In addition to activities performed under our manufacturing licences, the PMU and the Quality Assurance departments support Pharmacy activities within the Trust. This includes the provision of aseptic dispensing services for adult and paediatric parenteral nutrition and quality control checks on all purchased unlicensed medicines. We additionally provide training for student technicians and pre-registration pharmacists including staff from other hospitals in the region.
