Education, Training and Development
The Ipswich Hospital Pharmacy fully supports its staff in education, training and professional development

Our training program provides education and training events for all staff and reflects Pharmacy and Trust objectives. We have developed links with the University of East Anglia and West Suffolk College, and provide input into regional education and training courses and study events. The Department fully supports the development of staff through Continuing Professional Development and appraisals.

Pharmacists have opportunities to undertake a postgraduate qualification. We are an approved training centre for the Post Graduate Diploma on General Pharmacy Practice, (School of Pharmacy, University of East Anglia). We have a well-developed STEP (Structured Training and Education for Pharmacists) program linking a structured rotational program in a wide variety of professional activities. For Pre-Registration Pharmacist training, we have a comprehensive in-house training program with opportunities to gain experience in a range of pharmacy services linked to regional training provided by the University of East Anglia Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacist Programme.

Pharmacy technicians are employed in senior positions in the department, including managerial and there are opportunities for extended role training linked to the University of East Anglia school of Pharmacy. These extended role courses include Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT), patient consultation skills, Medicines Management and Medicines Reconciliation. Pre- and in-process checking for aseptic services is also being piloted. There is a comprehensive training program in place for pre-registration (student) Pharmacy technicians with the assessing and internal qualification being performed internally by our qualified assessors and verifiers, as well as lunchtime training and development sessions. Competencies are used throughout the department to support and consolidate learning.
