East Anglia & Ipswich Hospital Medicines Information Centre
Members of the East Anglian Medicines Information Service at Ipswich Hospital

The East Anglia Medicines Information (MI) Service is integrated with the Ipswich Hospital pharmacy department MI service at the hospital. The East Anglia MI Service is part of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service and commissioned through NHS England and is also part of the UK Medicines Information (UKMi) network.

The MI service is accessible to healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, dieticians etc.) working in primary and secondary care and for patients across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The service provides evidence-based information and advice to ensure safe, effective and optimal use of medicines.

The service is staffed by a team of experienced and specialist pharmacists who work together to offer a wide range of services:

  • providing answers to questions and problems involving medicines and management of diseases and conditions for healthcare professionals;
  • reviewing information and evidence on new and existing medicines to produce bulletins and summaries for use locally and across the East of England;
  • providing information and advice directly to patients through the medicines advice for patients helpline;
  • providing information and advice to staff working within various organisations across NHS Midlands and East to support them in their work (such as clinical commissioning groups [CCGs];
  • supporting hospital-based medicines information pharmacists working in the NHS trusts within East Anglia by providing training, quality assurance programmes, advice and access to additional information sources; and
  • providing training in medicines information skills to pharmacy undergraduates, pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and other healthcare professionals such as non-medical prescribers.

The service is actively involved with national medicines information projects and contributes to the annual UKMi Practice Development Seminar and various UKMi working groups, including the national executive, clinical governance and patient safety.
