Inside the Pharmacy at Ipswich Hospital
Department Overview

We believe we have a progressive and responsive Pharmacy team that is developing pharmaceutical and medicines optimisation services.

A comprehensive range of pharmaceutical services is provided from the main pharmacy including a well-respected clinical pharmacy service, an automated dispensing and stock distribution system, lead manufacturing unit for East Anglia and on-site East Anglia Medicines Information Service. We also have a modern state-of-the-art chemotherapy preparation unit based in a satellite unit in the Oncology centre. We have a wholesale dealer’s licence, manufacturing licence, Home Office licence and are registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a registered premises.

Our team consists of Pharmacy porters, assistants, clerical and laboratory staff and registered Pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.

The department is keen to support development opportunities for staff to undertake extended roles and higher levels of practice. There is a well-developed in-house training programme for all staff.

The service is well respected throughout the Trust and many of our staff work closely with other departments and clinical specialities.  We have a strategy for Medicines Optimisation with a Medicines Optimisation Committee that meets every month. We provide a 7-day service with clinical pharmacy teams working on some wards at the weekend.

Our IT services include the JAC computer system and we have an electronic discharge process. There are plans to implement electronic prescribing during 2017.

We also work closely with Ipswich and East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
