Patient Services

The Ipswich Hospital Occupational Therapy Service sees patients across the hospital in many of the specialist areas and also provides an outpatient service.

Our main aim is to work with patients and their family/carers to understand how their illness or accident is currently affecting their ability to function safely. We will carry out an assessment, and identify ways of enabling the patient to return home as safely as possible, often through giving advice about how to carry out everyday tasks in different ways or by providing equipment to achieve this. We often refer patients on to our community colleagues for further support or rehabilitation once they are home. We are key members of the ward team, supporting and often leading the discharge planning of inpatients.

Our occupational therapists work in the following areas:

  • Emergency Assessment Unit
  • Surgery
  • Cancer Care
  • Orthopaedics
  • Stroke Care
  • Neurology
  • Complex Care (including older people’s care and complex medicine)
  • General Medicine
  • Short Stay Older People’s Care
  • Hand Therapy
  • Rheumatology
  • Children’s Services

Inpatient services
All wards have access to an Occupational Therapy service. If the doctor or nurse in charge of your care feels you may benefit from occupational therapy they will refer you. Our core hours of business are 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Occupational therapists can help in many ways to aid your recovery while you are in hospital, such as:

  • teaching new ways of performing daily tasks (personal and domestic) encouraging confidence and independence in these areas;
  • treatment to improve areas of difficulty caused by illness, trauma or disability. For example: activities to improve power and range of movement, coordination, balance, concentration, memory or visual difficulties; and
  • providing specialist equipment and advising on home adaptations. If appropriate a home assessment may be carried out with you in your own home to identify what help or equipment will be needed on discharge.

Outpatient services
Our core hours of business are 8.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

We provide outpatient services to the following areas:

  • Rapid Assessment Clinic (GP rapid access for falls and strokes)
  • Hand Therapy
  • Rheumatology
  • Neurology
