Safety first
21 April 2017

Senior clinical staff at Ipswich Hospital have today confirmed that we comply with the latest safety standards regarding nasogastric (NG) tube placement and checking.

All NHS organisations were required to undertake an assessment of practice against resources supplied in a national patient safety alert. Our assessment indicated that we were compliant but that some of our systems could be strengthened. As a result we have:

  • reviewed our policy and have written a separate policy for NG tubes which are not used for feeding;
  • put in further restrictions so only compliant products are ordered;
  • identified an e-learning training package which will be introduced;
  • reviewed the competency assessment for nursing staff.
