Mums and dads-to-be are now able to see lifelike images of their baby moving in the womb
Parents chance to see baby’s life in the womb

Mums and dads-to-be are now able to see lifelike images of their baby moving in the womb after our hospital began offering a 3 and 4D imaging service.

The realistic scans give parents-to-be the chance to see their baby’s face and features in much more detail than a traditional 2D ultrasound, and can capture static photographs as well as moving images of them smiling, yawning or sucking their thumb.

Ipswich is the first hospital in Norfolk and Suffolk to offer the scans, which take around 40 minutes, and are completed by a consultant obstetrician, ideally around 28 weeks into the pregnancy. They are carried out in the same way as a traditional ultrasound scan, with parents then given a memory stick containing a video of their baby moving in the womb to take away.

As the scans are in addition to those provided as part of routine maternity care, parents-to-be will need to pay for them.

Heather Arkle, operational lead for women’s services at the hospital, said: “We are really pleased to be able to offer this new service to parents-to-be who are keen to see images of their baby in more detail. They should be able to see their baby’s features clearly, and if they are lucky might see them smile or yawn.

“The scans will be carried out by one of our consultant obstetricians, who will be able to explain to the parents exactly what they are seeing and answer any questions they may have.

“The service we are offering is unique in this region and we hope it will be well received by women who would like something extra to the scans they receive on the NHS. We are also able to offer the opportunity for other family members or friends to be present during the scan.”

A small number of slots have been made available each week, with more to be added if the service proves popular.

In addition to the 3D and 4D scans, the hospital is also able to provide reassurance scans at any time during the pregnancy from six weeks. Usually, the 3 and 4D scans are priced at £150, while reassurance scans are £125. As a special offer in the run up to Mother’s Day, prices have been reduced on 17 March and 24 March to £125 for 3 and 4D scans, and £100 for reassurance scans.
