Generous Jemma prepares for SAS charity challenge
08 January 2018

A brave team of hardy gym-goers are gearing up for the ultimate challenge as they prepare to take on a 24km SAS selection exercise to raise money for Ipswich Hospital’s appeal for a new breast care unit.
The 15-strong team from Ipswich Strength and Conditioning, which includes Jemma Yarnton-Peacock, a therapeutic radiographer at the hospital, will take on the Fan Dance Race next Saturday (13 January).
The gruelling challenge will see them scale Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, before descending the other side, turning round and climbing the mountain for a second time. The infamous march is the world’s oldest special forces test, and is considered the yardstick of a candidate's potential to pass the SAS selection course.
The team hope to complete the challenge in around six to seven hours, depending on weather conditions. They have already raised £1,500 for the Blossom Appeal, which aims to build a state-of-the-art breast care unit at the hospital to improve patient experience, and are hoping to push the total even higher by the time they have finished the race.
“The whole team was really keen to support the appeal, as we can see that it will benefit our friends and relatives,” said Jemma, who is 26. “Improving the environment for patients as they move through the hospital will make such a difference to hundreds of people every year.
“I’m looking forward to the race but am also feeling more nervous as it gets closer. We’ve been training hard and doing as much as we can to practice climbing, but Suffolk is so flat that it’s been difficult to find any particularly hilly areas!
“We’ve also held lots of fundraising events at the gym which have raised another £500 for the appeal, which is great news. We now want to make sure we push our total as high as we can as every penny will help to make a difference.”
