£100,000 mortuary upgrade opens

A new-look family area, visitors’ room and garden have opened in the mortuary at Ipswich Hospital to provide relatives with a calm and reflective space in which to say goodbye.

The £100,000 upgrade, which was funded by The Ipswich Hospital Charity, has seen the public areas made brighter and more welcoming, while doorways have been widened and a new disabled toilet installed so that it is fully accessible to people using wheelchairs. New artwork has also been added, the staff room refurbished and the Somersham Support Group has also paid for new seating.

The new-look area has been renamed the Rosemary Suite, and was opened by Ipswich mayor Sarah Barber, who is also a nurse in Ipswich’s paediatric day surgery team. It took place during Dying Matters Awareness Week, which ran from 14 to 20 May and aims to break down taboos so that people find it easier to talk about dying, death and bereavement.

Shane Mongor, mortuary manager at Ipswich Hospital, said: “We are really pleased with this upgrade, which provides relatives with a more welcoming environment in which to spend those last precious moments saying goodbye to their loved ones.

“The family room has been transformed into a reflective and relaxing space, while the visitors’ room has been made more homely and fitted with special lighting. The outside area has also been completely transformed, with new planting and a patio added.

“We are very grateful to everyone who has donated to The Ipswich Hospital Charity and made this important upgrade possible. It will make a real difference to people at what can inevitably be a very difficult time.”
