Birth Registration

Your baby’s birth must be registered with the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths within 42 days after the date of his or her birth. All Suffolk Register Offices
operate an appointment system for your convenience so you will need to telephone the appropriate office to make an appointment. You will need to have registered the
birth and be in receipt of the birth certificate before you can make a claim for child benefit.

The phone numbers and addresses of local offices are available from the hospital or at www.suffolkcc.gov.uk/registerservice

Registering your baby with a GP
It is important for you to register your new baby with a GP as soon as possible. This is not done automatically and to do this you will need to:

  • contact your GP surgery and complete a form (GMS1).
  • Surgeries will not be able to accept your baby as a patient without his or her
    NHS number.
  • This should have been issued following birth, so please ensure you have this
number before you try to register with your GP.
  • If you do not have your baby’s NHS number, please contact the Maternity
    Administration team on 01473 703000.
