What are 3D and 4D baby scans?

Imagine having an image of your developing baby which is so clear that you can see face and features in such detail that you are amazed. That’s our 3D baby scan service.

Then imagine, that as you watch your baby move as we scan, that we can capture it on video and let you keep it forever – that’s our extra-special 4D baby scanning.

Let us tell you more...

We are pleased to be able to offer a discrete, consultant-led service for scans during your antenatal period which are not provided as part of NHS maternity care.

Using state-of-the-art scanners in our Obstetric Ultrasound Department, we can offer a range of scans; ones that offer reassurance in the earlier part of pregnancy (from six weeks) and, later, the opportunity to see your baby in 4D.

We can also offer ‘reassurance’ scans, if you just want to know that all is OK with your pregnancy. Our reassurance scans are standard 2D ultrasound scans, but can provide peace of mind between and after your routine antenatal ones.

Your scans will be stored on our secure server following NHS guidelines for data storage.

What makes our service special
  •  As the scans are performed by a consultant obstetrician who is experienced in fetal medicine, you can be assured of high technical ability and knowledge. You also have the peace of mind that, should you have any queries about the scan, or a concern or problem is detected, our consultant is in the best position possible to make arrangements for further tests, if necessary.
  • No GP or midwife referral is necessary.
  • Having a scan with us does not affect your NHS entitlement of scans already requested or agreed by your healthcare professional.
  • You will be provided with a structured report of your scan which can be incorporated into your handheld notes, which you can then share with your healthcare professional.
Our range of scans
  • Early pregnancy reassurance scans: 7 – 14 weeks
  • Reassurance scan later in pregnancy: 14 weeks.onwards
  • 3D / 4D scan: 24 – 32 weeks, for best image quality.

Preparation for your scan

To get the best possible image of your baby, it is best not to use moisturising cream on your bump for a couple of weeks before your appointment. This will avoid a build-up of cream that may prevent us from obtaining a clear image.

On the day of your appointment you will need to bring along your handheld notes so that we can have full information about your pregnancy.

For scans before 14 weeks gestation you may be asked to wait and drink enough fluid to fill your bladder, or be offered a transvaginal scan.

For scans after 14 weeks, you will not need to have a full bladder.

Where do I go to

We will perform your scan in our Obstetric Ultrasound Department, which is on the ground floor of the Maternity Block at Ipswich Hospital. Click here for details about getting to the hospital.

During your scan...

Your scan will be performed by a consultant obstetrician. There will also be a chaperone available.

During your 30-minute session, you can have family members in the room with you, although we limit this to your partner, your children and one other relative or friend at a time, but as many people as you wish may come in during your appointment.

What will I be able to take home?

All of our 3D and 4D baby scans are given to you on a ‘Precious Memory’ memory stick, so that you can view and share the images and / or video clip with family, friends and loved ones.
