Consenting to Treatment
It is important that before you undergo a procedure, operation or treatment, you fully understand your condition and the options that are available to you, so that you are able to give valid consent.
No treatment will be carried out without your consent.
The staff caring for you will explain:
- Your condition and the possible treatments and/or investigations required.
- The risks and benefits of the treatment, procedure, operation, including the risks and benefits of not having anything done.
- Whether additional procedures may be necessary, such as a blood transfusion or the removal of particular tissue.
- Any alternative treatments which might be available and any significant side effects.
- Your right to change your mind and to withdraw your consent at any time.
If you do not understand what you have been told then please ask the member of staff straight away, so that they can explain the proposed treatment or investigations to you again. It is not unusual for patients to need a further explanation.
If you have any concerns, talk to the staff caring for you.
