I am a general surgeon with an interest in colorectal and laparoscopic surgery. I am the colorectal MDT lead, Surgical lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and also Surgical Tutor.

I publish my major surgical results nationally as part of the NBOCAP program. I am also a member of the ACPGBI.

My surgical interests include: colorectal cancer surgery, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, colonoscopy, pouch surgery, stoma management, hernia repair, anal fistula surgery, haemorrhoids.

Mr Ali Malik is an experienced general, laparoscopic and colorectal surgeon who was appointed as a consultant in 2014, as part of the drive to promote laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery at Ipswich Hospital.

He trained in the South London (Kent Surrey & Sussex) Higher Surgical Training (HST) programme managed by the London Deanery and has achieved the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Following award of Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS, Edinburgh) in 2002, he obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College (FRCS) in 2012. During this time, he completed a Masters degree in Surgical Sciences (MSc) at University College London, focusing on the biology of tumours and their interaction with the environment. His laboratory work as a Cancer Research UK funded researcher at the Royal Free Hospital, London looked at activating death (apoptosis) pathways in cancer cells and was awarded a Distinction by the University of London.

He has worked at many centres of excellence including King's College Hospital London, University College London Hospital, Guy's Hospital and St Thomas' Hospital London during 17 years as a surgeon. He employs advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques for abdominal surgery. Mr Ali Malik's experience at Basingstoke Hospital as a post-CCT Fellow in Laparoscopic & Advanced Colorectal Surgery has provided skills in treating advanced intra-abdominal malignancy. He has made many national and international presentations. He has been awarded by the Royal Society of Medicine and the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland for his work on natural orifice keyhole surgery.

Mr Ali Malik specialises in the management of bowel cancer including advanced recurrent cancers and pelvic floor conditions. He performs open and keyhole surgery to manage bowel and other abdominal conditions and has been the first surgeon at Ipswich Hospital to perform a laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy for prolapse and transanal minimally invasive (natural orifice) surgery (TAMIS) for rectal tumours. He performs keyhole hernia surgery, keyhole appendectomy, keyhole cholecystectomy and emergency general surgery. Having performed hundreds of endoscopic procedures, he has JAG (Joint Advisory Group on Endoscopy at the Royal College of Physicians) accreditation and routinely performs colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and gastroscopy to detect bowel diseases. He is actively involved in teaching junior doctors and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor and Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery (Lap-Co) Trainer for surgeons-in-training.

He enjoys life in Suffolk with his wife and two children.

Being one of the only few specialist colorectal surgeons in the UK with a degree in Coloproctology, and having extensive advanced training in Coloproctology including fellowships at internationally recognized centres at Basingstoke and Christie Hospital, Manchester, Mr Arshad Malik provides ‘personalised cancer care’ services for colonic and rectal cancer using laparoscopic/robotic/trans-anal TME, TAMIS, and open procedural skills, manages anal cancer, applies principles of cyto-reductive surgery for advanced abdominal and pelvic cancers, and manages benign anorectal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistulas, fissures, pilonidal sinuses and recto-vaginal fistulas. Arshad provides services for laparoscopic management of IBD/UC/Crohn’s disease including pouch surgery. He also provides specialist clinics in management of pelvic floor disorders at Ipswich hospital and uses various procedures proficiently such as the laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy. He also provides laparoscopic management of abdominal wall hernias and gallbladder problems.

Arshad is also a British Society of Gastroenterology accredited (JAG) ‘colonoscopy trainer’, for higher surgical trainees and registrars and also performs upper G I endoscopies for which he is also JAG accredited. He strongly believes in teamwork to provide top quality services to patients to get the best outcomes by utilizing the skills of specialists and multidisciplinary teams.

Arshad is a honorary clinical tutor at University of Edinburgh where he teaches postgraduate doctors and supervises research projects leading to Masters in Surgery.

Arshad underwent higher surgical training with a national training number in East of England, rotating through Cambridge and Norwich hospitals. He was awarded Chief residency by East of England School of Surgery during his tenure at Addenbrookes Hospital in 2013, as a result of which he did a year’s management course in healthcare leadership at the famous Judge Business School, University of Cambridge.

He also had overseas higher surgical training where he topped his post-graduate examinations in state and took a laparoscopic fellowship in his early years of higher surgical training in 2002. As well as this, he was awarded the national merit scholarship.

His key research publications are on management of malignant colorectal polyps and role of laparoscopic surgery for management of colorectal cancer with many other publications to his credit in highly ranked peer reviewed journals.

Following my preclinical training, I was awarded a National Scholar and graduated from Cairo University in 1995. My early surgical Training followed by a 5 years Specialist-Registrar Training in Surgical-Oncology (Cancer-surgery) at the National Cancer Institute“UICC”,The international Directory of Cancer Institutes&Organizations. My higher surgical training included a two-year in clinical research evaluating surgical outcome following treating Colorectal Cancer completed in 1999. I was awarded my Master’s Degree. I then spent three years researching Neuroblastoma, an abdominal malignancy and was awarded my PhD. in Surgical-oncology.

Added to completion of a second Higher surgical training programme gaining further experience in Addenbrooke’s and Norfolk&Norwich University Hospitals, I enhanced my experience in the sub-special science of treating incontinence in Bristol Royal Infirmary and Middlesex Hospital, London.

I was awarded the National traveling Fellowship of GBI spending my international fellowship in The Schubert-Martin Inflammatory Bowel Disease Centre, Cincinnati Medical Hospital, Ohio, USA exploring the art of treating IBD in adolescence and young-adults.

I completed a second fellowship as the prestigious International Fellow in recurrent rectal and advanced pelvic cancer in Christchurch Colorectal Centre,NewZealand working with internationally recognized pioneers in this field.

I refined my Laparoscopic(Key-Hole) Surgery experience at the European Institute of Tele-Surgery,University of Louis-Pasteur,Strasbourg,France as well as in Hamburg,Germany where I completed my advanced laparoscopic training.

I have also completed my Royal College of Physician of GBI accreditation for independent diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and was awarded the JAG Qualification.

I was appointed to Ipswich Hospital as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon in August, 2014, There I contributes to the Colorectal Unit expansion and modernization working in team with colleagues aiming at providing the best level of patients care and treatment.

I am in charge of improving the teaching and training of our junior doctors and I work in proximity with our Gynaecological Oncology team operating advanced pelvic cancers.
