Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST)

MUST stands for the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, which is a validated tool for identifying malnutrition.

MUST training allows care staff in all care settings, whether this is within the patient’s own home, a nursing home or hospital, to identify when the person they care for is at risk of malnutrition.

MUST training for community healthcare professionals

Our dietitians deliver a MUST training programme across East Suffolk. The programme provides training to care homes, GPs and community healthcare professionals. Training focusses on malnutrition and its associated risks, and provides a step-by-step guide for using MUST to identify malnutrition risk, and how to implement an action plan to improve a person’s nutritional status, using the local policy. The course content includes Food First education, and information on how to boost an individual’s nutritional intake.

If you would like to request training days for community healthcare professionals, or wish to find out more information regarding the training provided, please contact us.

MUST training for care homes

We have recently changed the way in which we deliver training for nutritional screening and management of malnutrition across the care homes in East Suffolk. We now provide centralised half-day study sessions throughout the year, which include interactive workshop-based learning and will provide opportunities for sharing good practice and networking with other care homes. This training is aimed at nursing staff, carers and managers, so please ensure attendees will be able to cascade training to staff in your home.

We have also developed training for catering staff based in care homes, providing information and guidance on Food First principles, and how to support residents with, or at risk of malnutrition.

We will notify care home managers of dates and times close to the time of training dates.

If you would like more information on training days, or wish to find out more about the type of training provided, please contact us.
