Food First for Malnutrition

The Food First project is an initiative that was developed locally about 12 years ago. It aims to overcome the issue of malnutrition in the community in East Suffolk.  Here you will find information on malnutrition and what to do if you think you, or someone you care for is at risk.

What is Food First?

Food First is the recommended, evidenced based first line treatment for malnutrition. The idea of Food First is based upon using every day food items to enrich your diet with energy and protein. Many people who are at risk of malnutrition also suffer with poor appetites, or have such a high requirement for energy and protein that they struggle to eat enough to maintain their weight. The use of Food First helps these individuals to increase the energy and protein content of their food without having to eat big portion sizes.

About Food First

Building on our work around MUST which started in 2004, the Food First project was re-launched in 2011 by the community dietitians in the Nutrition and Dietetic Department at Ipswich Hospital. The main aim of the project is to reduce the high numbers of people who are at risk of malnutrition in the community by:

  • increasing the awareness of malnutrition amongst the public and healthcare professionals;
  • helping individuals to recognise the symptoms of malnutrition early on; and
  • educating people on how to treat malnutrition through the use of every day foods and drinks.
