Workforce Race Equality Standard

The NHS Equality and Diversity Council and NHS England devised the Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) to ensure that applicants and employees from black and ethnic minority (BME) backgrounds have equal access to career opportunities and receive fair treatment in the NHS workplace.

The WRES is part of the NHS contract for all NHS organisations including the Trust, who have to demonstrate progress against nine indicators of workforce equality, of which four are based on organisational workforce data and four on data derived from national NHS Staff Survey. These all highlight any differences between the experience and treatment of White staff and BME staff in the NHS, with a view to closing any gaps highlighted. The last indicator requires NHS organisations to ensure that their Boards are broadly representative of the communities they serve with a specific indicator to measure and address the low levels of BME Board representation.

The information contained within this document is based on data from the financial year 2015/16 and reflects changes to the WRES indicators required for the 2016 WRES data returns (WRES Indicator 1 and WRES Indicator 9).
