What does Equality, Diversity and Inclusion mean?

Equality Diversity Inclusion portrait strip

Does "Equality" mean treating everyone the same?

Absolutely not; in fact we do have to treat people differently sometimes to ensure that their needs are met, whether this may be for staff or people using our services. This is crucial for us to be fair and inclusive.

"Equality is not in regarding different things similarly, equality is in regarding different things differently." - Tom Robbins

Diversity is about understanding and appreciating the relative uniqueness of each individual irrespective of age, gender, race, religious beliefs, disability, sexual orientation, social class and marital status. We can improve care and provide a better environment for patients and colleagues by understanding that each of us has our own individual outlook, experiences, strengths and needs in life. Organisations always benefit from having people from diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives.

Equality is championed right across the Trust from Board level to all staff.

We ensure that any form of discrimination is challenged appropriately with the right support. The Board is committed in making our Trust a better place to work so that everyone can feel safe, included, valued and respected. It is extremely important for staff to work in a comfortable and pleasant environment as this enables them to perform to their optimum level.
