Overview: The Lung Function Unit carries out a wide range of tests and investigations aimed at establishing how well the respiratory system is working. The results of these tests help with the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of a range of respiratory disorders, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The department also operates a sleep service to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea and provides a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) service to treat the condition.
Clinic times: Monday – Friday  08:30 – 17:00
What to expect at your appointment: Most tests involve breathing manoeuvres such as breathing deeply, blowing fast, short breath-holding. Some degree of effort is required to carry them out but almost all people are capable of performing them. With the exception of the exercise tests, most of the investigations are carried out in the seated position and removal of clothing is not necessary.
When and where to get results of any tests: If you are attending a consultant's clinic immediately after your Lung Function tests, the results will go through with you to that clinic. If not, the results will be sent to the referring doctor after you leave the department.
