Welcome to the Children and Young Person’s Diabetes Team at Ipswich Hospital

We are a team consisting of paediatric and adult Diabetes consultants, paediatric, adolescent and adult Diabetes specialist nurses, specialist Diabetes dietitians and a clinical psychologist.

We offer comprehensive care for all children with diabetes living in the Ipswich and East Suffolk area, including those with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as rarer causes of diabetes including genetic-related and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. The care, support and education we provide is delivered across a variety of environments within Ipswich Hospital (the Diabetes Centre and the ward environment), and the community (home and school settings). We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated Diabetes Centre where patients may be seen throughout the whole of their care at Ipswich.

We have a multidisciplinary children’s clinic each Thursday morning for children up to the age of around 16 years. A Young Person’ Clinic for 16-19 year-olds is held in the afternoon through to the early evening of the second Monday of each month. Both clinics are held in the same building – The Diabetes and Endocrine Centre. We offer at least four outpatient appointments per year and also approximately eight separate contacts – telephone, home / school visits, newsletters and social events. We also arrange an annual children’s diabetes holiday.

Our vision is to work in partnership with children with diabetes and their families in order to help them to maintain good health and achieve effective diabetes management.

We aim to provide patient-centred care that is evidence-based and makes good use of current research and new technologies.
