Overview: Ipswich Hospital has three upper gastrointestinal surgeons who specialise in managing patients with disorders of the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, liver and gallbladder. Many of the operations done for conditions of these organs are performed using laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery). The surgeons perform endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach and duodenum) and also perform endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) which allows pictures to be taken of the bile ducts and the gallbladder and also to perform procedures on the bile ducts, such as removing gall stones from the duct.

The surgeons also perform the wide variety of general surgery procedures including hernia repairs, removal of diseased spleens and removal of minor lumps and bumps.
