Overview: The Breast Imaging Department carries out mammograms, breast ultrasound and needle biopsies for women referred to the Ipswich Hospital Breast Clinic by their GP. Women who have a strong family history or who have themselves been treated for breast cancer may also be referred for regular follow-up screening.

The Satellite Breast Screening Unit provides screening for 47,000 women aged 50-70 as part of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme. Over the next six years the programme will be expanding to women aged 47-73. All women registered with a GP in East Suffolk will be sent an invitation every three years to attend a screening clinic either at Ipswich Hospital or one of the seven mobile sites throughout the area. Women over the age of 70 can phone and make their own appointment.
