Overview: The Breast Imaging Department carries out mammograms, breast ultrasound and needle biopsies for women referred to the Ipswich Hospital Breast Clinic by their GP or for further assessment by the National Breast Screening Programme. Women who have a strong family history or who have themselves been treated for breast cancer may also be referred for regular follow-up screening.

Some women attending for routine screening under the National Breast Screening Programme may be seen for their mammogram in the department. All women aged 50-70 and registered with a GP in east Suffolk will be sent an invitation every three years to attend a screening clinic either at Ipswich Hospital or one of seven mobile sites in Felixstowe, Leiston, Framlingham, Woodbridge, Stowmarket, Eye and Hadleigh. Women over the age of 70 can phone and make their own appointment to attend for screening every three years.
