Why do you need to test me for chicken pox before starting methotrexate?

Because methotrexate suppresses your immune system you will have a slightly higher risk of contracting infections, and chicken pox can be a particular risk. If you are unsure if you have previously had this disease, we will do a blood test to check if you have immunity before starting this drug.
